Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

July 3, 2025

Revitalizing Health Through the Power of Oxygen

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an innovative, non-invasive treatment that harnesses the healing power of pure oxygen to accelerate the body’s natural recovery processes. Whether you're recovering from a chronic wound, neurological condition, or injury, HBOT may offer significant benefits by delivering enhanced oxygen levels to tissues that need it most.

At our center, we provide state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy under the guidance of experienced medical professionals, offering safe, comfortable, and evidence-based care for a wide range of health conditions.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing 100% pure oxygen in a specially designed, pressurized chamber. While inside the chamber, the air pressure is increased to 1.5 to 3 times higher than normal atmospheric pressure. This allows your lungs to take in more oxygen than would be possible under regular conditions.

This highly concentrated oxygen is then transported through your bloodstream to tissues throughout the body, stimulating healing, reducing inflammation, and combating infection.

How HBOT Works

Under normal conditions, oxygen is primarily carried by red blood cells. In a hyperbaric environment, oxygen dissolves directly into all of the body's fluids—plasma, lymph, and cerebrospinal fluid—allowing it to reach areas with restricted or compromised blood flow. This results in several therapeutic effects, including:

  • Increased oxygen delivery to injured tissues
  • Enhanced white blood cell activity and immune response
  • Reduction in inflammation and edema (swelling)
  • Promotion of new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis)
  • Acceleration of wound healing and tissue regeneration
  • Detoxification of harmful substances (such as carbon monoxide)

Conditions Treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

HBOT is FDA-approved and widely used as part of an integrated treatment plan for a variety of conditions. It is especially effective in addressing:

1. Chronic Non-Healing Wounds

  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Venous leg ulcers
  • Pressure sores
  • Radiation-induced wounds
  • Post-surgical non-healing wounds

2. Infections

  • Osteomyelitis (chronic bone infection)
  • Necrotizing fasciitis (“flesh-eating” bacterial infections)
  • Certain refractory skin infections

3. Radiation Injuries

  • Radiation cystitis
  • Radiation proctitis
  • Radiation-induced tissue damage from cancer treatments

4. Neurological Conditions

  • Stroke recovery
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Cerebral palsy (adjunctive use)
  • Post-concussion syndrome

5. Other Indications

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Air or gas embolism
  • Decompression sickness (common in divers)
  • Skin grafts or flaps at risk of failure
  • Sudden hearing or vision loss (selected cases)

HBOT continues to be studied in relation to emerging applications such as Alzheimer’s disease, Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, and long COVID, showing promising potential.

The HBOT Experience: What to Expect

Your HBOT journey begins with a full medical evaluation to determine if the therapy is right for you. Once approved, here’s what a typical session involves:

Before the Session:

  • You will change into 100% cotton garments provided by our facility.
  • You’ll remove any items not allowed in the chamber (watches, cell phones, cosmetics, etc.).
  • Vital signs and blood sugar levels (if diabetic) are monitored prior to treatment.

During the Session:

  • You will lie comfortably in the hyperbaric chamber—either a monoplace chamber (for one person) or a multiplace chamber (shared with others but monitored individually).
  • As the chamber pressurizes, you may feel a sensation similar to airplane takeoff in your ears—this is normal and temporary.
  • The session typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes.
  • You can rest, listen to music, or watch a screen while inside the chamber.

After the Session:

  • Most people return to normal activities right away.
  • A series of treatments is usually recommended for best results, ranging from 10 to 40 sessions depending on your condition.

Is HBOT Safe?

Yes. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-tolerated, low-risk procedure when performed by trained professionals in a certified medical facility.

Possible but rare side effects include:

  • Temporary ear discomfort or sinus pressure
  • Mild fatigue or lightheadedness after the session
  • Claustrophobia in some patients (we offer calming strategies and support)
  • Oxygen toxicity (extremely rare and minimized through strict monitoring)

We conduct thorough medical screening to minimize risks and ensure optimal safety and comfort throughout your treatment.

Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Patients often experience life-changing improvements in their health and quality of life after completing a series of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) sessions. Benefits include:

  • Faster healing of chronic wounds and post-surgical injuries
  • Reduced swelling, inflammation, and pain
  • Enhanced cognitive function and brain oxygenation
  • Improved immune system response and infection control
  • Decreased fatigue and improved energy
  • Reduced scarring and tissue damage
  • Better outcomes for radiation-injured tissues

In neurological cases, many patients report clearer thinking, better focus, improved mood, and enhanced mobility and function.

Who Should Not Undergo HBOT?

While HBOT is safe for most individuals, it is not recommended for those with certain conditions, including

  • Untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
  • Certain types of lung disease
  • Recent ear surgery or injury
  • Severe claustrophobia (unless managed appropriately)

Our specialists will evaluate your medical history and current condition to determine if HBOT is right for you.
